Common Memory Loss Disorders

Woman thinking about memory loss disorders

It isn’t very pleasant to think about, but forgetting can be a normal part of aging. As we get older, structures and functions in our brains and bodies can become less effective. However, when memory loss becomes disruptive, it may be time to ask a doctor about it or seek memory care. For those living with a memory loss disorder, the importance of memory care cannot be understated. Families who are seeking out a memory care program in Dallas, or in other parts of the country, may find that learning more about common memory loss disorders empowers them to make the best decision for their loved one.

Common Memory Loss Disorders

There are many reasons that a person can experience a loss of memory. Most people have heard of dementia, but there are actually many different kinds. Some of these are:

  • Alzheimer’s disease – Probably the most well-known of the common memory loss disorders impacting seniors, Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be caused by abnormal protein build-up in the brain, but there may be other risk factors involved. Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, meaning that it starts out with mild symptoms which grow more severe over time.
  • Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) – MCI is a term that describes memory loss that goes beyond normal age-related memory problems, but does not quite reach the severity of dementia. People with MCI may be aware that they are experiencing memory loss or confusion.
  • Depression – It may surprise you to learn that depression can cause memory issues, especially in seniors. People experiencing depression can have trouble with short-term memory, focusing, and other cognitive tasks. Depression is a treatable illness that can improve with medication and other therapies.
  • Strokes – Some people have strokes without realizing anything unusual has happened. These are sometimes called “silent” strokes and can be the cause of memory loss and other cognitive impairment. This type of stroke can often be diagnosed with a brain scan.
  • Thyroid problems – The thyroid is a gland in the neck that helps the body regulate its metabolism, among other functions. If the thyroid is malfunctioning, producing too much hormone or too little, this can result in problems with memory and thinking. Thyroid problems can be diagnosed with a blood test.
  • Parkinson’s Disease – Parkinson’s is a progressive disorder that impacts the nerves of the brain and body. Most people recognize that Parkinson’s causes tremors and problems with movement, but progressive damage to the nerves can also cause issues with memory and thinking.

How to Know if Forgetfulness is Normal or Related to a Memory Loss Disorder?

It can be difficult to recognize the early symptoms of a memory loss disorder, especially when you see a loved one every day. However, there are some warning signs to look out for that may be worth speaking about to a doctor:

  • Losing items repeatedly, even when the items are in their normal place
  • Frequent word searching or struggling to find the correct terms
  • Difficulty managing tasks that the person has been able to do previously
  • Mood changes or personality changes, getting angry or irritable
  • Asking the same question or repeating the same comments
