When choosing where to live during your retirement years, there are many factors that can influence what community is the right fit for you. A major consideration to make is whether a community has the right level of care for your needs, whether that be independent living, assisted living, memory care or long-term care services. You may also look into a community’s activity program or even the dining offered. One factor to note that isn’t as commonly considered, though, is whether a community is a for-profit or not-for-profit senior living community. Both for-profit and not-for-profit senior living have the common goal of offering safe, comfortable housing for seniors. However, there are a few key differences when it comes to the structure of the finances of the community.
Not-for-Profit vs. For-Profit Senior Living
For-profit senior living communities are priced to ensure the stakeholder, investors and/or managers receive a certain percentage of the revenue. The majority of senior living communities are for-profit organizations. The main financial goal of this type of organization is to maintain strong occupancy numbers in order to result in a high profit. A not-for-profit senior living community, on the other hand, is usually backed by a religious or charitable foundation and is financially a mission-driven organization. Revenue received for services and housing is reinvested solely to improve the community and the organization’s mission, so any fees you are paying are turned directly back into the community itself to offer residents the best care and amenities.
What Does Not-for-Profit Mean at Ventana?
Ventana is backed by our parent organization Buckner Retirement Services and is a not-for-profit senior living community. Buckner Retirement Services began in 1879 as tiny row houses where retired pastors and missionaries were offered a place to enjoy retirement with dignity and comfort. Eventually in 1954, Buckner opened its first official retirement community. Over the next five decades, Buckner Retirement Services continued to expand with senior living communities and senior care services across the state. Today, Buckner Retirement is the second largest provider of nonprofit senior living communities in Texas, and the 52nd largest nationally. Each community is designed to enhance the lifestyle of its Members and live up to our mission of Inspiring Happiness. While Buckner has continued to refine its programs and senior care services to uniquely serve each generation of seniors throughout its 138-year ministry, one thing hasn’t changed: the faith-filled commitment to provide senior adults with dignified living and expert care, no matter what.
